How one broken shingle comes out clean

Cedar gets fixed board by board. We don't patch over it.

  1. Free the broken shingle

Its nails get cut with a shingle ripper, and it slides out. The shingles beside it stay fastened.

  2. Check what's underneath

We look at the underlayment and spaced sheathing in the gap. Any soft wood gets replaced.

  3. Fit new red cedar

It goes in at your roof's existing shingle exposure. Stainless steel nails hold it, so nothing rusts or streaks the wood.

Colour match

Will new cedar stand out against the gray?

New red cedar goes on honey-toned. Sun and rain turn it weathered gray within a season or two. We pick shingles close to your old ones in thickness and grain, so the repair blends in.

Facing the street? On that slope, a preservative treatment can even out the color sooner. It also helps the new wood resist rot.

Repair FAQ

What to know before you book

When is a wood roof past repair?

When the majority of shingles are cupped or rotted, or the spaced sheathing has gone soft. Then it's time to replace the whole cedar roof rather than keep repairing it.

Can you repair just a few shingles on an older roof?

Yes. Small fixes like that are the bulk of our wood shingle roof repair work.

Why stainless steel nails and not regular ones?

Regular nails rust inside cedar. They stain the wood, loosen and let shingles slip.

Is the free estimate done on the roof itself?

Yes. We see the damage in person before we price anything.
