Kitchen Extension Roof Leak Repair for Queens Brick Homes

Your kitchen extension roof leak usually starts where the flat roof meets the back wall of the house, and Flat Roofers NY traces and fixes it there. We work on row houses, semi-detached and two-family brick homes with a rear extension.

Stain to source

Match the kitchen stain to its roof source

Where the water shows inside tells us where to look on top.

What you see inside Likely source on the roof Usual repair
Ceiling stain or damp drywall along the back wall Loose flashing or counter-flashing at the wall joint or parapet Flashing repair
Drip near a light fixture mid-ceiling Seam failure or ponding water over that spot Seam repair or patching
Peeling paint around the range hood Failed seal at the kitchen exhaust vent Re-flash the vent
Stain around the skylight Leak at the skylight curb Reseal the curb, or repair or replace the skylight if it recurs
Musty smell or sagging ceiling at the outer edge Clogged roof drain or scupper backing water up Clear the drain, tarp same day if it sags
The wall joint

Why the back wall joint goes first

Nearly every kitchen extension roof leak we're called to starts at this joint. The low-slope extension roof butts into your brick back wall. House and extension move at different rates. That works the counter-flashing loose, and water runs down behind the membrane.

How we rebuild it

We cut out the old flashing and turn new base flashing up the wall. Fresh counter-flashing goes into a reglet cut in the brick, then gets sealed. While we're up there, we check the parapet cap.

Our visit

On your roof: tarp, trace, repair, check

The crew works in this order.

  1. Tarp

Water dripping right now makes it an emergency visit. We tarp before anything else.

  2. Trace

We run leak detection over the whole extension roof. The true source can sit feet from the stain.

  3. Repair

Flashing, seam, patch or drain clearing. Whatever that source needs.

  4. Check

We look at your ceiling from inside the kitchen, then confirm it's dry after the next rain.

Size of the repair

Patch, re-flash or new membrane

Extension leaks rarely need a whole new roof.

Patching and seam repair

For one failed seam or puncture. The rest of the membrane has to be sound.

Flashing repair

For leaks at the wall joint, exhaust vent or skylight. The membrane stays.
